Tangut Ideograph 17DCB

3532/6136

𗷋 is a rare Tangut graph whose record leaves its everyday meaning unsettled as of 2026. Tangut writing served Western Xia administration and Buddhist translation and remained in use after the state fell. The script drew on Chinese structural principles, but it is separate from Chinese writing.

What 𗷋 means

The catalog cannot establish its everyday meaning as of 2026.

Unicode associates this graph with Hán Xiǎománg’s 2004 index as H2004-A-5844. The Unicode Consortium’s UniTangut guide places index 5844 in a rare third category: graphs known only from secondary word lists or commentaries, with no mapping to Li Fànwén’s 1997 Tangut dictionary. The catalog identifies the form, but it does not justify guessing an everyday translation.

Tangut writing was documented in use from 1036–1502, spanning the Western Xia period and centuries after the Mongol conquest in 1227. It served administration and Buddhist translation. After the conquest, surviving texts point to a later religious and literary setting. Tangut drew on Chinese writing’s structural principles, but it is a separate writing system.

Why does 𗷋 display as a box?

Your font may not include Tangut characters.

𗷋 is Unicode text; a Tangut-capable font supplies its visible form. Without Tangut coverage, it may appear as a box or fallback symbol. Fonts can draw it differently without changing the character’s Unicode identity.

Legacy Tangut resources do not all use Unicode directly. XXZT and Mojikyo conversion paths can rely on font-specific or private-use mappings, which are not portable between systems; convert text from either source to Unicode with a tool that supports it.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗷋 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
