tangut ideograph-17dce

Tangut character L4480

3535/6136

𗷎 means “separate” or “distinguish” in Tangut. Tangut writing served Western Xia’s official and cultural life. A box in its place means your font lacks Tangut coverage.

Text symbol

What 𗷎 means

It marks separation: setting one thing apart.

Historical dictionaries translate it as “separate,” “distinguish,” or “divide.”

Western Xia used Tangut writing for government and culture. A documented example appears on page 8A of Tangut Homonyms, a wordbook whose closing note is dated 1188; a surviving copy surfaced at auction in 2014. A comparison also links its “separate” sense to a word in the Gyalrongic languages, another language group. That compares vocabulary, not scripts.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗷎 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
