tangut ideograph-17dec

Tangut Ideograph-17DEC

𗷬 is a Tangut character in the script for Tangut, the language of the Western Xia kingdom in northwestern China. Around 1036, the script was created to strengthen the kingdom and translate Buddhist texts. It borrowed visual ideas from Chinese writing without deriving from it; the neighboring Khitans, who had also created scripts, set an example. Tangut texts include Buddhist works, Chinese classics in translation, and secular writing.
