Tangut character 17DF9

3578/6136

𗷹 is a Tangut character glossed “to kick.” The Tangut script served Western Xia for government, Buddhist translation, and other writing, and later appeared in official, private, and religious texts. A lone 𗷹 reads as historical-script text unless context gives it another role; a Tangut-capable font is needed to display it.

What 𗷹 means

𗷹 is glossed “to kick” in Tangut.

Developed under Western Xia’s first emperor, the Tangut script served a distinct state and cultural tradition, including Buddhist translation. Its designers drew on neighboring Khitan state scripts and Chinese structural principles while creating a separate writing system.

Medieval manuscripts, inscriptions, and official, private, and religious texts preserve its use. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell before the script became obsolete.

Historical and specialist: 𗷹 in casual chat reads more like a text excerpt, study reference, or font test than an everyday reaction.

Don’t assume a lone 𗷹 is a chat reaction; read it as Tangut text unless surrounding messages point elsewhere.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗷹 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
