𗷺 means “former times” in Tangut. The script was modeled partly on Chinese and Khitan writing, but this is a Tangut word.

Text symbol

What 𗷺 means

It names a time before the present. A Tangut sound-and-rhyme dictionary called Sea of Writing records it as “former times.”

Tangut writing emerged in the Western Xia state around 1036–1037 to write its language and serve government. It also carried Buddhist translations, laws, books and inscriptions, and later Yuan religious printing; the latest known inscription is dated 1502.

A historical Tangut word; alone, it gives little clue to why someone sent it.

Is 𗷺 Chinese? No; it is Tangut.
