Tangut character 𗸝

3614/6136

𗸝 is a Tangut character; its word value has to be looked up in a Tangut dictionary, since the Unicode label is only a locator. It belongs to the writing system made for the Tangut language of Western Xia, preserved in historical texts and scholarly study.

What 𗸝 means

A Tangut dictionary gives its reading; L2008-1704 is only a lookup key.

The 2025 Unicode source record links 𗸝 to the Tangut dictionary entry L2008-1704 and a radical-stroke index, but that record gives no English gloss. The entry label helps locate the dictionary entry; it is not a translation or pronunciation.

Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia—a state in present-day northwestern China—ordered the Tangut script in 1036. The project supported state government, Buddhist scriptures in Tangut, and a written identity distinct from the Song dynasty. Tangut script-making followed nearby Khitan efforts to create a state script and drew on Chinese writing principles, while serving the Tangut language. A manuscript from Khara-Khoto, a ruined city, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century and translates a Chinese work into Tangut. Other surviving texts include Buddhist, Confucian, military, and literary writing. After the Mongol conquest, the script's role shifted from state writing to scholarly and digital study.

Why does 𗸝 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
