What 𗹠 means

It means “skilful” in Tangut. Scholars write its reconstructed reading as 1rer₄. A Tangut word study groups it with a synonym—another word with a close meaning—glossed “skilful.” In Tangut text, use that as the meaning; sent alone in a modern chat, the character is safer to read as a text sample than as a sure compliment.

Why was Tangut writing created?

Tangut writing was created for the Tangut language, and the earliest secure date for its official use as the Western Xia state script is 1036. Accounts credit Emperor Li Yuanhao with the political launch and associate the official Yeli Renrong with developing the script's forms, though they divide those roles differently. Its main design model was Chinese writing, with possible Khitan influence; Tangut remained a distinct script for its own language. It served administration and literacy while marking statehood and cultural autonomy.

Manuscripts found at Khara-Khoto, a ruined city, preserve Buddhist sutras, Chinese classics translated into Tangut, encyclopedias, military works, literature, and official documents. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming; a Buddhist inscription dated 1502 is the latest known example.

How can I type 𗹠?

Use a Tangut-specific input method. Documented tools offer stroke-code entry, which searches by strokes or components, and phonetic entry built on scholarly reconstructed readings. That phonetic route may ask for 1rer₄; standard Chinese phonetic input is not a substitute for a Tangut method.

The visible shape depends on the active font. As of 2026, Noto Serif Tangut lists support for the Tangut block. Without a font that covers Tangut, this character may appear as a blank box or replacement mark; the appearance does not mean the underlying text character changed.

Tone: historical and specialist; expect the glyph in Tangut text or a character reference.

A lone message does not show that the sender meant “skilful” as praise.

Why does 𗹠 show as a box?

Your active font likely lacks Tangut coverage. A font with Tangut glyphs can render the same underlying character; the box is a display fallback, not a changed character.
