Text symbol

What 𗹯 means

Unicode names it by number, not by its Tangut word or reading. A Tangut dictionary and sentence context give the historical word and reading.

Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao ordered the Tangut script's creation around 1036 to strengthen the state and translate Buddhist scriptures. Its design drew on Chinese writing. Tangut rulers followed their Khitan neighbors, who had earlier created scripts of their own, but Tangut wrote a distinct language. After Western Xia fell, Tangut remained in use under the Yuan and Ming dynasties for Buddhist texts, Chinese classics, military works and literature.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗹯 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
