What 𗹮 means
Use a specialist Tangut lookup or input tool. It is the practical way to select this exact character.
A browser or app without a Tangut-capable font may show it as an empty box.
What does 𗹮 mean?
Its Unicode label identifies it; it does not translate the Tangut word. Unicode's Tangut source data links 𗹮 to the dictionary identifier L2008-1931 and radical-stroke index 245.8. These are lookup aids, not a pronunciation or English gloss; use a Tangut dictionary and the surrounding passage to identify its word meaning.
Why was Tangut writing created?
To write for the Western Xia state and its Buddhist tradition. The Tangut script was created around 1036 under the first emperor of the Western Xia state. It served official administration, a Buddhist canon in Tangut, and a state identity distinct from Song China. Tangut translations also carried Chinese and Tibetan histories, classics, military texts, and literature.
A surviving manuscript fragment from Khara-khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut writing continued during the Yuan and Ming periods after Western Xia fell. Khitan scripts were a nearby precedent; Tangut drew inspiration from Chinese writing but remained a distinct script with its own components.
