Tangut character 𗹶

3703/6136

𗹶 is a Tangut character glossed as “storeyed building”; its reconstructed reading is du̱¹, pronounced with a voiced d sound followed by a u vowel made with the tongue root drawn back, on tone 1. Tangut was the writing system of the medieval Western Xia state, used for Buddhist and legal texts. Its square shape does not make it Chinese, and its Unicode name is only an inventory label.

What 𗹶 means

A storeyed building. A Tangut pronunciation database reconstructs its reading as du̱¹: a voiced d sound followed by a u vowel made with the tongue root drawn back; the raised ¹ marks Tone 1.

The Unicode label Tangut Ideograph-17E76 is an inventory name, not a translation of the Tangut word.

What history does Tangut writing have?

Western Xia rulers ordered a native Tangut script in 1036. It served state-building, helped mark a distinct identity alongside Song China, and carried a Tangut translation of the Buddhist Canon, a collection of Buddhist sacred texts.

Surviving Tangut writing includes Buddhist books, legal records and law codes, and translations of Chinese classics, military works, and literature. A manuscript fragment from Khara-Khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century; the latest known Tangut inscription is dated 1502.

Chinese and Khitan writing influenced Tangut’s design; Khitan was another historical script used in the region. Tangut remained a separate script that readers could not read as Chinese. For this character, modern scholarship offers a reconstructed reading and a dictionary gloss.

Historical and scholarly; in an everyday message, it needs a gloss or context.

Do not infer a Chinese word from its square shape.

Drift: The pronunciation database labels its reconstruction series preliminary as of early 2025.

Why might 𗹶 appear as a box?

If the current font lacks Tangut glyphs, it may show a box or fallback mark even though the text contains this character.

Is du̱¹ a Chinese pronunciation?

No. It is a reconstructed Tangut reading in a scholarly transcription, not Mandarin pinyin. The marked vowel is articulated with the tongue root drawn back, and ¹ marks Tone 1.
