What 𗺈 means
Its dictionary glosses conflict. A Tangut dictionary’s Chinese index pairs it with 殞, meaning “to perish” or “to die”; the same dictionary’s English index labels that entry “raised.” Because the indexes conflict, neither short gloss settles the character’s exact meaning.
The Tangut script, also called Xixia, was created under the first Western Xia emperor around 1036 to write Tangut, a language spoken in what is now northwestern China. After the Mongol conquest of Western Xia, Tangut remained in use under the Yuan and Ming dynasties and had become obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. It appears in official, private, and religious texts, including books, sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts.
