What 𗺾 means
Its Unicode label identifies it; it does not translate it.
𗺾 belongs to the Tangut script, a system of signs used to write the now-extinct Tangut language. Unicode’s algorithmic name identifies the script and code point; it does not give the historical word or an English gloss. A scholarly reconstruction offers an approximate Tangut reading, but a reconstructed sound is not a translation.
Where you found it matters: in a manuscript or inscription, it is part of Tangut text; in a Unicode list, it identifies one encoded character; in a font test, it checks Tangut coverage. Translating the exact sign requires a Tangut dictionary or corpus entry.
Why was Tangut writing made?
It gave the Tangut state its own written language.
The script was promulgated in 1036 during the rise of Western Xia, a state led by the Tangut people. That date belongs to the writing system, not a proven first appearance of 𗺾 itself. The court used it for official writing; a distinct script also marked Tangut identity among neighboring states.
Tangut was used for Buddhist translations and Chinese works, and appears in books, inscriptions, and coins. After Western Xia fell, written Tangut continued: a Buddhist inscribed stone dated 1502 is a late surviving example. Tangut drew on Chinese models but is a separate writing system. Khitan and Jurchen are names for other historical scripts in the region; their signs are not alternate forms of 𗺾.
Why does 𗺾 look empty or wrong?
If it looks like a box, your font may lack Tangut glyphs.
𗺾 is text, not an emoji. A device needs a font with Tangut coverage to draw it; otherwise, the fallback may be a blank box or another placeholder. Different fonts can draw the same encoded character differently, which changes legibility, not identity.
A screenshot can make it seem absent or unfamiliar. Check the text with a Tangut-capable font before assuming the source contains a different character.
Historical-script text for scholarship, catalogues, and font tests; in an unexplained casual message it will read as obscure.
Without context, a reader may mistake it for Chinese text or a missing-glyph placeholder.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗺾 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
