What 𗻂 means

Its dictionary gloss is “shame.”

Scholars reconstruct the Tangut reading of 𗻂 as sew. This is a specialist Latin-letter transcription, not an English pronunciation guide.

Is Tangut writing Chinese?

No: Tangut is a separate writing system for the Tangut language.

Emperor Li Yuanhao introduced the Tangut script in 1036 for Western Xia state-building and a Tangut Buddhist canon. Its design was influenced by Chinese writing but was not derived from it.

The neighboring Khitans had developed scripts about a century before 1036, and the Tanguts followed that precedent; one Khitan script drew heavily on Chinese writing. Tangut writing continued in religious use after Western Xia fell in 1227; the latest dated examples are Buddhist stone pillars from 1502.

Historical and specialist in tone.

If 𗻂 appears as a blank box, the font or app may lack Tangut support.

1

Why does 𗻂 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
