Tangut Character 17EC0

3777/6136

𗻀 is a Tangut character in a medieval writing system for the extinct Tangut language; the glyph alone does not give a modern English translation. In a present-day message, treat it as a Tangut reference unless the sender supplies a reading or context. Whether it displays correctly depends on font support.

Text symbol

What 𗻀 means

𗻀 identifies a Tangut character; its Unicode name is an inventory label, not a gloss.

The Tangut script, also called Xixia script, was used to write the extinct Tangut language. The Unicode label identifies this character's place in the inventory; a Tangut dictionary entry or surrounding text is needed to identify its reading and translate it.

Tangut writing was created around 1036 under Western Xia's first emperor. It supported state identity alongside Song China and religious life, including a Tangut Buddhist canon; official, private, and translated Chinese works were also written in it. The script continued under the Yuan and Ming and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

What does it mean if someone sends 𗻀?

Treat it as a Tangut reference until the sender adds context.

A lone glyph does not show whether the sender is quoting a word, pointing to a manuscript, or checking font coverage. Ask which reading or passage they have in mind before translating it.

Tangut writing drew visual inspiration from Chinese characters, but it was a distinct script. Its design also followed examples from neighboring Khitan writing systems.

Why does 𗻀 look different on my screen?

The recipient's current font determines whether it is legible.

A font with Tangut coverage displays the character; one without it may show a missing-glyph box or replacement mark. Fonts can also differ in stroke forms.

Historical, scholarly, or typographic; in a modern message, it reads as a reference to Tangut writing.

Do not guess a Chinese reading from its square shape.
