What 𗻋 means
It means “to untie” or “loosen” in Tangut. Scholars reconstruct its reading as lhew².
Tangut writing took shape around 1036 as the Western Xia kingdom formed, serving state records and Buddhist translations. It adapted Chinese writing principles but remained distinct from Khitan and Jurchen scripts. An official message from 1072 is the earliest dated example. Religious use continued after the kingdom fell in 1227; a 1502 inscription shows the script endured.
