tangut ideograph-17f0a

Tangut character 17F0A

𗼊 is a Tangut character, not an emoji. The Xixia (Tangut) script wrote the language of Western Xia. It resembles Chinese writing, but its Unicode name is a code-point label, not a translation.

What 𗼊 means

It is a Tangut character; the code-point name is not a translation.

The Tangut script wrote the language of Western Xia, a state in northwestern China. A Chinese-like shape does not make this glyph readable as Chinese.

Why does Tangut look like Chinese?

Tangut borrowed Chinese writing principles, not Chinese characters.

Li Yuanhao commissioned the script around 1036 for state-building and official writing, including Buddhist translations. Khitan neighbors had created state scripts earlier; they were a regional precedent, not the source of this glyph.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued in religious works. Stone pillars carved with Buddhist texts and dated 1502 are the latest known examples, so the script outlasted the state in religious use.
