What 𗼔 means
It means “river” in written Tangut.
A Tangut–Chinese glossary gives 河, the Chinese word for “river,” as its gloss. That entry translates the Tangut word; it is not an alternate Tangut form.
Is 𗼔 Chinese?
No. It belongs to Tangut, a separate writing system.
Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao ordered the Tangut script in 1036 to write the Tangut language. Its characters were modeled partly on Chinese character structure, but it was a separate system used for official and cultural writing.
Surviving Tangut texts include Buddhist scriptures, Chinese classics, military works, and literature. A Khara-Khoto manuscript fragment is probably from the 12th or early 13th century; no secure first appearance for this individual sign is established as of 2026.
Historical and scholarly; it suits Tangut texts, script discussion, and historical identification.
Without context, readers may not recognize this historical script; gloss it as Tangut for “river.”

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗼔 show as a box?
Font coverage is the usual cause: the text can contain 𗼔 while the available fonts lack Tangut shapes. As of 2026, Noto Serif Tangut lists Tangut support, but Unicode's chart glyph is a reference shape, so fonts may draw it differently.
