What 𗾠 means

𗾠 is Tangut; its identifier is not a translation. 𗾠 belongs to Tangut, also called Xixia, the historical script for the Tangut language. “Tangut character 17FA0” identifies the encoded sign; it does not give its Tangut word or reading. Use a Tangut text or lexicon to find its value.

Tangut was created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor to support state-building and a distinct political identity; the court also sponsored a Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures. The earliest dated surviving Tangut text may be a document from about 1070/71; that dates surviving evidence, not this character.

It carried official, private, religious, and literary texts, including translations from Chinese and Tibetan and Confucian works. Use continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties after Western Xia fell, before Tangut became obsolete. Its design drew on Chinese writing; Western Xia’s official script also followed a state-building pattern used by neighboring Khitan states. Tangut wrote a separate language in a separate script.

What does it mean if someone sends 𗾠 alone?

Read it as Tangut, but don’t guess a word. A specialist may be identifying the character or pointing to a Tangut manuscript or word list. Sent without context, 𗾠 points to Tangut writing but does not show which word or reference the sender has in mind. Ask for the reading or surrounding text instead of guessing a Chinese meaning.

Scholarly and niche; it fits discussion of Tangut language, writing, or history.

Do not infer a Chinese word from its square form.
