Tangut character 17FA1

4002/6136

𗾡 is the Tangut character for bee, from a script commissioned for the Western Xia state and used in Buddhist and other writing. If it arrives alone in chat, the glyph itself gives little clue to the sender’s purpose, so ask for context.

Text symbol

What 𗾡 means

It is a Tangut character for the word bee. Its Unicode name identifies the encoded character; it does not translate the old word.

In 1036, Tangut emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the script as part of building Western Xia’s state identity. A century earlier, neighboring Khitan rulers had created scripts of their own; one Tangut aim was to translate the Buddhist canon, a collection of sacred texts. Tangut books also carried translated Chinese works, military treatises, moral instruction and literature.

A Tangut manuscript fragment from Khara-Khoto, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, preserves translated Chinese anecdotes about morality and proper conduct.

What does 𗾡 mean when someone sends it?

Alone, it has no established emoji-style reading as of 2026. Treat it as a historical writing character and ask the sender for context before reading a mood into it.

Is Tangut Chinese?

No. Tangut is a separate script and language. Its characters look structurally like Chinese writing, but Tangut did not derive from Chinese and cannot be read as Chinese.

Historical and scholarly in Tangut writing; in casual chat, it reads as an obscure character.

Do not infer an emoji mood from the glyph alone.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗾡 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
