What 𗿾 means
It means “cocoon.” 𗿾 writes a word in Tangut, the language of the Western Xia state, also known as Xixia.
The state promoted Tangut writing in 1036. It was used for government, law, Buddhist translations, and dictionaries.
A Tangut dictionary called the Sea of Characters, compiled in the mid-12th century, records 𗿾 at entry 72.211. Li Fanwen’s dictionary indexes it as L2268 and links it to Chinese 繭, the character for “cocoon.” This is a medieval record, not proof that the character first appeared then.
Was Tangut modeled on Chinese?
Partly, but it remained a separate script. Tangut writing borrowed some design principles from Chinese and Khitan writing, yet the scripts were mutually illegible; knowing Chinese alone did not let a reader read Tangut.
