What 𘀎 means
In Tangut, 𘀎 means “dark”; its reconstructed reading is mur₁.
The scholarly form mur₁ records a reconstructed Tangut reading, not a Mandarin pronunciation.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It served government, Buddhist translation, and a distinct Tangut written culture.
The planned Tangut script was developed in 1036–1038 under Emperor Li Yuanhao’s order by philologists led by Yeli Renrong. Chinese writing supplied structural ideas. Whether the Khitan, another historical people of East Asia, also influenced it remains debated.
Tangut texts included Buddhist scripture, government records and law, and secular works translated into Tangut. The earliest surviving Tangut text so far identified is an official document from 1072; the latest known inscription dates to 1502.
Why does 𘀎 show as a box?
Your font may not contain Tangut glyphs.
As of 2026, Noto Serif Tangut includes Tangut coverage; an app using a font without it can show a missing-glyph box, and fonts with coverage can draw the same character in different styles. That changes the display, not the character’s Tangut meaning.
Historical and scholarly; its basic meaning is lexical, not a sender’s emotion.
Read “dark” as a gloss, not a verdict on the sender’s mood.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘀎 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
