Tangut Component 035

𘠢 is a recurring piece scholars use to describe and index Tangut characters. A 2008 radical index links it to the scholarly transcription *khu, but that is a catalog label rather than an explicit translation of the piece. Tangut writing was made for the language of the Western Xia state; a component's label does not automatically give it the meaning of a full character.

What 𘠢 means

It is a structural piece, not a confirmed standalone word. Tangut characters reuse groups of strokes called components; scholars use them to describe how characters are built and to organize dictionary entries. An Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) is a compact formula showing how the pieces are arranged. Some components also occur as full characters, but their role can be unclear.

Under Western Xia rule, Tangut became an official language, and a writing system was developed for it and for translations of Chinese and Buddhist texts. The script drew on Chinese graphic traditions while remaining a distinct system for another language. A 2007 Unicode background paper noted that no surviving native guide explained every component's role. The rhyme dictionary titled 同音 (“Homophones”), which groups syllables by sound, was first printed in 1125; that date belongs to the book, not to 𘠢.

How can I type 𘠢?

A Tangut input method can offer it as a code-based candidate. As of 2026, an online Tangut IME describes code-based entry using candidates from a loaded dictionary. You enter a code, then choose a listed character or component with its assigned key or a click.

A 2008 radical index to Li Fanwen's Tangut dictionary pairs 𘠢 with entry 0344 and the transcription *khu. These identify a catalog entry; they do not establish a translation for the component by itself.

Specialist script material; alone in a message, it needs a gloss or a reason for sending it.

The 2008 index's *khu label is a catalog handle, not a proven translation.

The app may lack a Tangut font. As of 2026, Tangut IME Online warns that some mobile apps may fail to render Tangut text even though it remains Unicode text; a Tangut-capable font can display it.
