What 𘂒 means

The dictionary gloss is “a kind of grass.”

Tangut was the script for Western Xia's language, distinct from Chinese writing. Its technical number identifies the entry, not its meaning.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It gave Western Xia a script for government and religion. Li Yuanhao commissioned it around 1036; design credit is disputed with official Yeli Renrong. Chinese writing principles and the earlier Khitan script shaped it. It distinguished Western Xia from Song China and enabled Buddhist translations.

Earliest dated writing may be a document from 1070/1071; an inscription at Dunhuang dates to 1085.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut continued in Yuan records and Buddhist texts. The latest known dated examples are on Baoding stone pillars from 1502.
