What 𘂴 means
It is glossed as “tail” in Tangut lexical work. The meaning comes from historical word records, not from a picture-like reading of the character. Outside a Tangut text, most readers will not recognize the glyph or infer its meaning from its shape.
What is the history of Tangut writing?
It was a distinct script commissioned for the Tangut state. Tangut writing was commissioned in 1036 by the court of Emperor Li Yuanhao. Its compact, square forms drew on Chinese and neighboring Khitan writing traditions, while representing the Tangut language. The script served government records, legal writing, and Buddhist texts.
The earliest surviving transmitted Tangut text cited by script historians is an official military document from 1072. Tangut writing outlasted Western Xia: an inscription from 1502 shows the script still in use after the state fell.
Historical and specialist; its “tail” gloss makes sense in Tangut words and texts.
