What 𘂷 means
The best-supported gloss is “male animal.”
Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary indexes the character as entry 5488; a Unicode chart links that entry to the Chinese character 牡, which means a male animal. This is a translation aid, not a Chinese form to substitute into Tangut writing.
Why was Tangut script created?
It served the medieval Western Xia state.
Tangut was developed around 1036 for state writing and translation, including Buddhist works. The script drew on Chinese and Khitan models; Khitan was another medieval East Asian writing system. Surviving Tangut texts include law codes and literature. The latest known inscription dates to 1502.
Why does an old Tangut lookup say 5712?
An older draft says 5712; a later Unicode chart gives 5488.
These are dictionary-entry numbers, not different characters. A database returning 5712 may follow the earlier mapping; check its chart revision before trusting the gloss.
Historical and specialist: it signals interest in Tangut texts, philology, or rare-script typography.
Treat 牡 as a Chinese gloss, not a character to substitute in Tangut text.
