Tangut Character 180C2

4291/6136

𘃂 is the Tangut word for “east,” one of four compass directions in the medieval Tangut language. A documented sequence lists east, south, west, then north. Tangut writing was created for Western Xia state-building and Buddhist texts, then also carried translations and secular writing; its forms drew on Chinese and Khitan scripts, but this is a separate character.

What 𘃂 means

It is the Tangut word for “east.”

Tangut has separate words for the four compass directions. In a documented sequence, 𘃂 comes first, followed by south, west, and north.

In 1036, Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the creation of a Tangut script as part of building the Western Xia state. The script served Buddhist writing and a written Tangut identity. A manuscript found at Khara-Khoto, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, contains Buddhist texts, translations from Chinese, and secular writing. Tangut forms drew visual inspiration from Chinese writing and earlier scripts of the neighboring Khitan people; that influence does not make 𘃂 Chinese.

How do I type 𘃂?

A Tangut input method is the practical route.

An input method editor (IME) is software for entering characters without a matching keyboard key. In 2025, a web Tangut IME offered code entry, handwriting, and reverse lookup—a way to find an input code when you start from a character.

Font support determines whether 𘃂 appears. A square usually means the app lacks a Tangut font; Noto Serif Tangut is one font with Tangut coverage.

A text character for Tangut words, suited to linguistic, historical, or calligraphic contexts.

Don’t replace it with 東 or 东; both mean east in Chinese, but neither is Tangut.
