What 𘃣 means
Use a Tangut input method; a Tangut-capable font displays it.
Tangut input methods use stroke codes or reconstructed phonetic readings, and availability depends on your operating system and app. If the character appears as a blank square, the text is encoded but the selected font lacks this glyph.
What does 𘃣 mean?
It is a Tangut word linked to steps, levels, or rank.
Li Fanwen’s dictionary maps it to entry 5574 and gives a reconstructed reading—an informed scholarly estimate of its sound—vi. It cross-indexes the character with Chinese 階, glossed around steps, levels, or rank. That Chinese character is a meaning aid, not a replacement for the Tangut glyph.
The Western Xia court created Tangut writing in 1036 for state-building, including a native Buddhist canon and a distinct political identity. The script drew on Chinese and Khitan writing models without being Chinese script. Tangut texts include official, private, religious, and translated works. A Khara-khoto manuscript is probably from the 12th or early 13th century; Tangut became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.
Historical and scholarly, not ordinary conversational text.
Chinese 階 is a glossing aid, not a replacement for 𘃣.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘃣 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
