What 𘃢 means
It means “woolen cloth” in Tangut. 𘃢 is a written word for a wool textile, not an illustration. In a Tangut sentence or dictionary, it names the cloth. A dictionary gloss gives the old word, not the reason someone might post the glyph today.
Why was Tangut writing created?
To serve a state and Buddhist scriptures.
The Tangut script was created around 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao for the Western Xia (Xixia) kingdom. It gave the Tangut language a native writing system, distinguishing the state from Song China and supporting translation projects, especially a Buddhist canon—a collection of scriptures.
A manuscript from Khara-Khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties and became obsolete by the end of Ming; surviving material includes official, private, religious, and translated texts.
