What 𘃨 means

A Tangut dictionary index links 𘃨 to a posthumous title.

The index connects it with 謚/諡, the classical Chinese term for an honorific name bestowed after someone dies. That cross-reference gives a useful gloss, but it does not make 𘃨 interchangeable with the Chinese characters or establish its exact spoken reading.

Analyses of the script describe 𘃨 as a left-to-right construction with 𘤮 and 𘫶. This explains its written structure; the components do not form a phrase or replace the full character.

Why was Tangut script created?

It gave the Tangut language an official written form.

The Western Xia state commissioned Tangut script in the eleventh century. Its designers used Chinese-influenced character-building methods to write Tangut as an official language; 𘃨 belongs to that larger system. The earliest transmitted Tangut document is a military record dated 1072; a Liangzhou stele, an inscribed stone monument, dates to 1094.

Tangut writing continued in Buddhist and other texts after the Western Xia state's collapse in 1227. An inscription dated 1502 is later evidence of that writing; these dates do not establish a change in 𘃨's meaning.

How do I type 𘃨?

Enter 180E8 through a Unicode-aware hexadecimal input method.

For a document or font test, use an input method that accepts Unicode code points in hexadecimal. The keystrokes depend on the device or app; 180E8 is a code point, not a standard keyboard key sequence.

Historical and specialist; it suits discussion of Tangut writing and its surviving texts.

Its Chinese-influenced form does not make 𘃨 Chinese: Tangut and Chinese are distinct writing systems.

Why does 𘃨 look like a box?

Usually a font-coverage issue. If the selected font lacks Tangut glyphs, valid text can appear as a box or missing-glyph symbol; font support depends on the font, so choose one with Tangut coverage.
