tangut ideograph-180fb

Tangut ideograph 180FB

𘃻 is a Tangut character whose dictionary gloss is «surname». In a Tangut pronunciation key called fanqie, it supplies the rhyme and tone rather than a whole word. A message containing it alone gives no clear clue to the sender's intent.

What 𘃻 means

It is a Tangut character glossed as a surname.

The Tangut dictionary entry L2008-0494 gives that gloss. A 2025 Unicode working-group proposal gives a reconstructed reading and places the character in Tangut Homophones, a rhyme dictionary.

Fanqie is a two-character pronunciation key: the first character gives the initial sound, and 𘃻 supplies the rhyme and tone.

Why was Tangut writing made?

It supported Western Xia government and Buddhist translation.

The Tangut-led Western Xia created Tangut writing in 1036 to support state life and a Buddhist canon in Tangut. The script drew on Chinese writing principles and the neighboring Khitan script, yet became a distinct system. Khara-Khoto preserves Tangut manuscripts from the 12th and early 13th centuries; the corpus also includes classics, law, military works and literature.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut texts continued in religious and secular use; the latest known inscription is dated 1502.

A specialist historical character; its dictionary and sound-key roles need Tangut context.

Is 𘃻 an emoji?

No. It is a Tangut writing character, not a pictorial reaction; by itself, it does not explain why the sender used it.

Why does 𘃻 show as a box?

The font usually lacks this character's glyph. Unicode identifies the character, but fonts vary in Tangut coverage; select a Tangut-capable font.
