Tangut Ideograph 18131

4402/6136

𘄱 is a Tangut transcription character: in medieval texts, it writes the sounds of several Chinese characters, including 田 (“field”), but does not itself mean “field.” It appears in a pronunciation glossary and later in a Tangut version of a Chinese woman’s name.

What 𘄱 means

It writes Chinese sounds, not one fixed meaning.

Tangut was the language of Western Xia. In 1036 its court commissioned an official script, developed by Yeli Renrong and other scholars to give the state its own writing and translate major works. The 1190 Pearl in the Palm, a Chinese–Tangut word list, uses 𘄱 to note the sounds of Chinese characters including 天 (“sky”), 田 (“field”), 甜 (“sweet”), 𤤦, 殿 (“hall”), and 電 (“lightning”).

A bilingual memorial dated 1278 uses 𘄱𘞽 for Chinese 田氏, an address for a woman of the 田 family. Here 𘄱 writes the surname’s sound and 𘞽 marks it as a family name. In this inscription, a pronunciation character becomes part of a personal-name phrase.

What does 𘄱 mean when sent alone?

Treat it as a text sample until you have context.

One character can represent the sounds of several Chinese words, so a lone 𘄱 cannot show which word or name was intended. Ask what text or example it came from.

Historical and specialist; in ordinary chat, explain that it is a Tangut character used to write sounds.

Do not translate 𘄱 alone as “field.”
