Tangut Character 18132

4403/6136

𘄲 is a Tangut word meaning “to stop.” Tangut writing was used by the Western Xia state for Buddhist scripture and translations into Tangut. Although its characters were influenced by Chinese writing, the script records another language.

What 𘄲 means

It names the action of stopping.

A Tangut dictionary gives the English gloss “to stop.” The sentence around the character supplies the context for that action.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It supported Western Xia state-building and Buddhist translation.

Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the Tangut script in 1036 as part of building the state. It supported Buddhist scriptures in Tangut and helped distinguish the kingdom's identity from China's Song dynasty.

Chinese writing influenced Tangut's visual style and how its characters are built, but Tangut characters represent another language and cannot simply be read as Chinese. A manuscript from the Khara-Khoto ruins in Inner Mongolia probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century; it translates Chinese moral anecdotes into Tangut, showing the script was also used for secular teaching.

How do I type 𘄲?

Use a Unicode lookup or a Tangut input method.

A Tangut IME (input method editor) lets you enter characters through a dedicated keyboard layout or dictionary.

Why does 𘄲 show as a box?

A missing Tangut font is the likely cause. This is a text character, so the device needs a font that includes Tangut glyphs; a box on screen does not change the character.
