What 𘆓 means
Soft in feel, able to bend.
Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary glosses it as “soft, supple”; its reconstructed reading is transcribed as lhja².
Is 𘆓 Chinese?
No; it is Tangut.
Tangut writing borrowed visual and structural ideas from Chinese characters but remained a distinct script.
Created around 1036 for Western Xia’s official and cultural life, it continued in official texts, Buddhist works, and translations during the Yuan dynasty and early Ming period. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing eventually became obsolete.
A historical Tangut word, suited to reading its texts.
A dictionary gloss alone cannot explain why someone sent it.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘆓 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
