Tangut character 181C8

4553/6136

𘇈 is a Tangut character, but its word cannot be translated reliably from the glyph alone. The Xixia script served the Western Xia state in administration and Buddhist translation, alongside other writing. A scholarly index records the reading [da], which is not an English gloss.

What 𘇈 means

It is a Tangut character, but its word needs context. The Tangut script, also called the Xixia script, has characters whose word meanings depend on surrounding text. A scholarly index records 𘇈 with the bracketed reading [da]; that is a reading transcription, not an English gloss. To translate it, read the sentence with a specialist Tangut dictionary, a reference work that gives meanings for Tangut words.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It began around 1036 as a state script for Western Xia. Under emperor Li Yuanhao, Tangut writing supported state administration and Buddhist translation. A major project was a Tangut Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures—and the script helped the state mark a distinct identity from Song China. That dates the script's creation, not this exact character's first known appearance.

Tangut writing carried Buddhist, official, private, and literary texts, including sutras, inscriptions, Chinese classics, encyclopedias, military works, literature, and translations from Tibetan. After Western Xia fell, it continued under Yuan and Ming rule before becoming obsolete.

Is Tangut related to Chinese?

Tangut drew on Chinese writing, but it remained a separate script. Tangut character shapes and construction principles reflect Chinese influence; the script's design also followed an earlier Khitan pattern. That history explains the resemblance, but it does not make 𘇈 a Chinese character or tell you its word.

A historical-script character used in Tangut text and specialist references.

A Chinese-like shape does not make it a Chinese character.
