What 𘈜 means
Its reconstructed reading is a sound, not a settled English word.
A 2024 analysis of the Sea of Writing, a Tangut rhyme dictionary, indexes 𘈜 at position 57.112 as thwo1. This scholarly notation reconstructs the sound of a syllable; it does not translate the entry.
Tangut writing was developed in the 1030s for the 11th-century Western Xia state. It carried government records, Buddhist texts, and translations from Chinese and Tibetan. Its design drew on Chinese and Khitan writing traditions, yet Tangut is a distinct script.
Why does 𘈜 show as a box?
Your font or app may not support Tangut.
As of 2026, some mobile apps may fail to display Tangut text. Fonts such as Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan Beta also draw the script differently. A box can signal a display problem rather than a different character.
How do I type 𘈜?
Use a Tangut input method with a matching dictionary.
RIME is an input-method system: its dictionary maps typed codes to characters. The browser-based Tangut input tool starts without a Tangut dictionary, so load a compatible one, enter its code, and select the matching character.
Scholarly and archival, especially in work involving Tangut texts.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘈜 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
