tangut ideograph-18247

Tangut character for a capacity measure

4680/6136

As a Tangut character, 𘉇 matches Chinese 斛, an old capacity measure. Tangut writing became the Western Xia government’s official script around 1036–37; its oldest surviving example is a 1072 document. It served state records and Buddhist texts, including works copied after the Western Xia fell in 1227. In a book from 1190, a Tangut scholar said Tangut and Chinese writing looked different but had related roots.
