Tangut character 𘉏

4688/6136

𘉏 is a Tangut character whose dictionary gloss is “void.” It appears in a Buddhist expression translated as “empty space,” and the script served the Western Xia state. A Tangut input method and a font with Tangut coverage are needed to enter and display it.

What 𘉏 means

Its dictionary gloss is “void.” The Tangut–Chinese dictionary lists the entry as L4515.

Tangut is a separate writing system for the Tangut language. Its square forms resemble Chinese writing, but 𘉏 belongs to Tangut, not Chinese.

In a Buddhist text, the two-character sequence 𘉏𗲠 is translated as “empty space”; that is the phrase’s meaning, not a second standalone gloss for 𘉏.

How did Tangut writing outlive Western Xia?

It served Western Xia as a state script, then outlived the state. Around 1036–1037, it was used for official records, teaching, and translations into the Tangut language.

A surviving official document from 1072 was sent to a military official in Guazhou. Tangut writing continued after the Mongol conquest of Western Xia in 1227; a stone inscription from 1502 attests to later use.

Tangut’s construction has been compared with the neighboring Khitan Small Script, another writing system. Some scholarship proposes Khitan influence on Tangut’s use of components, the parts combined to build characters. This is a possible connection between scripts; it does not make 𘉏 a Khitan character.

How do I type 𘉏?

A Tangut input method enters it; a supporting font displays it.

A Tangut input method editor (IME)—software for entering characters—can search by English meaning or handwriting; code entry depends on its loaded dictionary.

Noto Serif Tangut is designed for the script; fonts without Tangut coverage may show a missing-glyph box. That box means the font cannot draw 𘉏.

Historical and specialist; it points to Tangut or Western Xia texts.

Is 𘉏 Chinese or Tangut? It is Tangut.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘉏 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𘉏 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
