What 𘉫 means
𘉫 is Tangut writing, indexed with the reconstructed reading kjɨr.
That Latin-letter form records a scholarly estimate of the sound, not a translation into English. The glyph alone does not identify which word it represented in a Tangut text.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It gave Tangut a written form for the Western Xia state.
Devised around 1036, the Tangut script served official records, Buddhist translations, manuscripts, inscriptions, and printed books. A separate script also marked the state’s political and cultural independence alongside Chinese writing.
The script outlasted Western Xia: a Buddhist stele—an upright inscribed stone—dated 1502 is the latest specimen a historical survey could date.
Why does 𘉫 look like Chinese?
Tangut and Chinese share character-shaped forms, but are separate scripts.
The forms can look familiar because both writing systems use complex characters. Tangut writing has Chinese elements and structural influence, but that connection does not make 𘉫 readable as a Chinese character.
Historical and typographic; understanding its reading requires Tangut-language context.
A font without Tangut coverage may leave the glyph hidden in a square or blank.
