What 𘊯 means
In Tangut, 𘊯 means “silent” or “quiet.”
Where did 𘊯 come from?
It belongs to the Western Xia state’s Tangut writing system.
Western Xia created Tangut in 1036 for state-building and cultural purposes, including Buddhist translation and an identity distinct from Song China. Its design drew on Chinese writing and an earlier writing system made for the Khitan state. Western Xia used it for official, legal, Buddhist, and translated texts.
A Tangut manuscript from the Khara-khoto site probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. As of 2026, this glyph’s first attestation has no secure date.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘊯 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
