What 𘊿 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses it as a fire striker or beacon fire.
Li Fanwen’s dictionary reconstructs its reading as ba, an estimate of the Tangut sound.
The script was promulgated around 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao for state records and Buddhist texts. Its design drew on Chinese writing and the neighboring Khitan state’s script while remaining distinct.
Tangut glyphs vary across fonts
A document dated around 1070/1071 may be the earliest Tangut writing. Yuan- and Ming-period texts show the script remained in use.
In 2026, designers adapted historical Tangut forms for digital fonts. Glyph outlines vary; an unsupported character may show as a box.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘊿 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
