What 𘋔 means
The dictionary gloss is “cover” or “conceal.”
Li Fanwen’s dictionary gives Chinese 掩 as the gloss and records the reconstructed Tangut reading in scholarly Latin transcription as lẹj. 掩 is a translation, not another spelling.
Western Xia emperor Li Yuanhao commissioned Tangut (Xixia) in 1036 for state-building: writing the Tangut language, supporting Buddhist scriptures, and marking an identity distinct from Song China. It followed Khitan examples and drew on Chinese writing’s form and design without deriving from it. A manuscript from Khara-Khoto, a former city in Inner Mongolia, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century; that dates the manuscript, not 𘋔 itself.
Historical and specialist; hard to decode without Tangut context.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘋔 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
