What 𘋡 means
No English gloss is settled for 𘋡 as of 2026.
Tangut dictionary entries give reconstructed readings such as phji¹, phi₄, and phi¹. These Latin-letter forms label scholarly sound reconstructions; they are not English translations or a reliable pronunciation guide.
“Tangut Ideograph-182E1” is a Unicode name generated from the code point. It identifies the encoded character; the surrounding Tangut text and a Tangut lexicon establish what word it represents.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It served Western Xia government and Buddhist scripture. Western Xia emperor Li Yuanhao ordered Tangut writing around 1036 as part of building the state. The script also expressed a distinct Tangut identity alongside Song China.
Tangut writing drew on Chinese writing’s visual appearance and character-building principles, but it is a separate script. The project also followed earlier Khitan state-script precedents. After Western Xia fell, Tangut remained in official, private, Buddhist, and literary works under Yuan and Ming rule, including translations from Chinese; it had become obsolete by the end of the Ming period.
How do I type 𘋡?
Use a Tangut-specific input method. As of 2026, documented options include stroke-code entry, which builds a character from its shape, and phonetic entry based on scholarly reconstructions. A Rime profile—a configurable input-method setup—also accepts Latin-letter readings, strokes, and four-corner shape codes.
Because reconstructions differ—phji¹ in one system and phi₄ in another—the phonetic spelling expected by one method may not work in another. Stroke-code or four-corner entry avoids choosing a reading.
Unicode stores the character independently of the font that draws it. If 𘋡 appears as an empty box, choose a font with Tangut coverage in the app; the input method cannot make a missing glyph display.
Specialist and archival: it belongs in Tangut text and historical discussion.
A reconstructed reading is not an English translation.

It can if the active font lacks Tangut coverage. Unicode encoding and font coverage are separate, so select a Tangut-supporting font in the app.
