What 𘌯 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “rising sun.”
Unicode names it by its code number rather than by meaning. A 2008 Tangut–Chinese dictionary lists it under entry 5296 and gives the Chinese character 旭 (“rising sun”) as its gloss. That explains the meaning without making 𘌯 a Chinese character.
The Tangut script, also called Xixia, was created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor for the Tangut language. Its forms drew on Chinese writing and followed the earlier example of Khitan state scripts, while remaining a distinct script. It was used for Buddhist texts and Chinese works translated into Tangut; use continued into the Yuan and Ming periods before the script fell out of use.
Why does 𘌯 show as a box?
The font or app lacks a usable Tangut glyph.
𘌯 is text whose shape comes from a font, not separate platform artwork. A Tangut-capable font such as Tangut Yinchuan can display the Unicode Tangut repertoire.
Historical and scholarly; its meaning comes from Tangut dictionary work.
旭 is a Chinese gloss, not an interchangeable Chinese form of 𘌯.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘌯 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
