What 𘍨 means
Its documented standalone gloss is “earrings.”
A Tangut dictionary records that gloss. In one Buddhist sacred formula, 𘍨 writes a syllable in a Tangut transcription of Sanskrit; scholars reconstruct its reading as xji. Here it marks sound, not another everyday meaning.
Tangut writing was devised around 1036 for government and Buddhist translation in the Western Xia kingdom. The earliest surviving document dates to 1072. Later manuscripts were found in the ruined city of Khara-Khoto. Chinese writing shaped Tangut forms; Khitan-script influence is debated. The latest known inscription dates to 1502.
