Tangut character 1836F

4976/6136

𘍯 is a Tangut character glossed in a specialist dictionary as “banquet” or “feast.” Tangut writing served the Western Xia (Xixia) state in administration and in Buddhist, legal and literary texts. Alone in a modern message, it is more likely a historical-script reference or font test than a conversational cue.

What 𘍯 means

A Tangut character glossed as “banquet” or “feast.”

A Tangut–Chinese dictionary links 𘍯 with 宴, the Chinese word for a banquet or feast. That is a translation gloss; it does not make 𘍯 a Chinese character. Tangut is an extinct language, so its readings are reconstructed from written evidence.

A Tangut specialist can treat it as a reconstructed word. A standalone message gives someone who cannot read Tangut little conversational context; it is best understood as historical-script text or a font test.

How did Tangut writing develop?

It began as state writing and outlived the Western Xia court.

Under Li Yuanhao, the founder and emperor of Western Xia, the state sponsored the script around 1036–1037; scholars including Yeli Renrong helped develop it. It gave the state a written language for administration and helped distinguish it from Song China. Tangut texts include Buddhist translations, law codes, Chinese classics and secular works.

The earliest securely dated Tangut document known in transmission is an official message to a military inspector from 1072. After Mongol forces conquered Western Xia in 1227, Tangut writing continued: inscriptions are dated 1345, 1348, and 1502. The script drew partly on Chinese and Khitan writing but records a different language. 宴 is a translation aid, not an alternate form of 𘍯.

Historical Tangut text; opaque as a standalone message without script knowledge.

Avoid using it as a casual reaction unless the Tangut context is clear.

Why does 𘍯 show as a box?

The active font lacks a Tangut glyph. Choose a font with Tangut coverage; the character itself has not changed.

Can I send 𘍯 to someone who does not know Tangut?

Only if the context is clear. Someone unfamiliar with Tangut may see an unexplained historical character, and a font without Tangut coverage may show a box.
