What 𘍳 means
It means “special,” “unusual,” or “remarkable.”
A Tangut copy of an old Chinese book, the Classic of Filial Piety, records ¹ge₄, a scholarly reconstruction of its pronunciation, with glosses including “surpass.”
Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao ordered the script in 1036 to write Tangut and mark a distinct political identity; Chinese writing continued alongside it. Chinese models shaped its square forms, while possible Khitan influence remains debated. The script served government records and Buddhist texts, and survived the state’s fall to the Mongols in 1227 in mostly Buddhist materials.
