What 𘎐 means
It is a Tangut character; its Unicode name is only an identifier.
The Unicode 17.0 Tangut index cross-references it to entry 4827 in Li Fanwen's 2008 Tangut–Chinese Dictionary; that number points to a dictionary entry, not a translation. To interpret it in a historical text, check the entry or the surrounding Tangut words.
Tangut writing was created in 1036 on the order of Li Yuanhao, emperor of the Western Xia state, for the Tangut language. It supported state-building and a distinct identity from Song China; scholars think compiling a Tangut Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures—was a major reason. Chinese characters influenced its forms and construction, but Tangut did not derive from Chinese. The neighboring Khitan states had created two scripts about a century earlier, offering a model for a state script.
At the ruins of Khara-khoto in Inner Mongolia, researchers found a Tangut manuscript fragment translating a Chinese work. Undated, it probably comes from the 12th or early 13th century and contains short stories about the Chinese emperor Taizong and his ministers. Tangut texts also included Buddhist works, official writing, translations from Chinese and Tibetan, and original works. The script remained in use into the Yuan and early Ming periods before falling out of use.
How can I type 𘎐?
Use a Tangut input method with a loaded dictionary.
RIME is configurable input software; Tangut schemes include four-corner, radical, Xuanpin, and Cangjie methods. Load the matching dictionary before typing.
Specialist and archival: Tangut scholars can place it in historical texts; readers without that background may only recognize an unfamiliar script.
Its Chinese-influenced shape does not make it Chinese; 𘎐 belongs to the separate Tangut script.
