Tangut was the language of Western Xia, a state in northwestern China. In the Buddhist title 𘏞𘛛𗤶, a Chinese annotation gives 菩提心 (“awakening mind”).

The Tangut script was promulgated in 1036 for official writing and translations. Its earliest surviving text is an official military dispatch dated 1072; Tangut writing continued in northern China into the Ming period.
