What 𘐭 means

Use a Tangut input method with a Tangut-capable font.

Rime is an input-method framework with Tangut layouts; as of 2026, documented options search by reconstructed reading, strokes, or the shapes at the four corners. A Tangut-capable font is needed to display the result; an ordinary Chinese keyboard is not a dependable way to find it.

What does 𘐭 mean?

It is a Tangut word glossed as “bucket” or “tub.”

Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary matches it with the Chinese character 桶, meaning “bucket” or “tub,” and records its reconstructed reading as go. It also appears in Sea of Writing, a Tangut character guide, and Homophones, a pronunciation reference.

In 1036, Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao ordered a distinct Tangut writing system as part of state-building. It was visually inspired by Chinese writing but did not derive from Chinese; it was used for Buddhist texts and translations, official records, and other works. The earliest surviving transmitted document is an official text dated 1072. Tangut writing continued in public and religious texts after Western Xia fell.

Why does 𘐭 look different in another font?

Different outlines can reflect accepted Tangut forms.

A 2025 Unicode working-group paper says both the encoded outline and a modern Tangut dictionary’s form are acceptable. It notes that the encoded outline follows a construction rule in Sea of Writing, a guide to how Tangut characters are built.

Use 𘐭 when discussing Tangut texts or dictionaries; add a gloss for readers unfamiliar with the script.

Its Chinese-inspired structure does not make it a Chinese word.

Why does 𘐭 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
