What 𘐯 means
It is glossed as “a surname.”
A Tangut dictionary by Li Fanwen gives 𘐯 this gloss. Scholars reconstruct its reading as rjir²; the superscript 2 marks a tone category, not a digit to type.
When and why was Tangut writing created?
It was created in 1036 for Western Xia state-building. The script supported Buddhist writing and helped give the state a distinct written culture beside neighboring Song China.
Tangut writing drew on Chinese writing and the neighboring Khitan script while remaining its own system. Surviving works include Buddhist texts, legal writing, and Chinese literature translated into Tangut.
A surviving Tangut manuscript associated with Khara-Khoto is probably from the 12th century or early 13th century. The latest known Tangut inscription dates to 1502.
